On the Chinese character "黑"


The Chinese character 黑 (hēi) can be a noun, adjective and verb. When used as a noun, it refers to the color "black" or the "dark night". When used as an adjective, it means "black", "illegal" or "bad". When used as a verb, it means "to attack", "to destroy", "to hack" maliciously, or "to tan". 

In this article, we'll focus on its use as a verb. Take a look at the following examples: 

nǐ zhè shì zài hēi rén jiā a
你这是在黑人家啊。
You're being sarcastic.

hēi de piào liang 
黑得漂亮!
Nice sarcasm!

lǎo shī bù yīng gāi hēi xué shēng de nǔ lì
老师不应该黑学生的努力。
The teacher should not deprecate his student's efforts. 

dàn shì, zhōu liù wǎn shàng yāo qǐng hán fā bù hòu hái bú dào yì xiǎo shí, wǎng zhàn jiù bèi hēi le. 
但是,周六晚上邀请函发布后还不到一小时,网站就被黑了。
But within an hour after the invitation was posted on Saturday night, the website was hacked.

The followings are the use as an adjective complement

dù jià de dì yì tiān wǒ jiù bèi kǎo hēi le
度假的第一天我就被烤黑了。
On the very first day of my holiday I was burnt to a crisp. 

tā bèi miǎn diàn zhōng wǔ shí fēn de yán rè kǎo hēi le
他被缅甸中午时分的炎热烤黑了。
He was browned by the midday heat of Burma. 

tā men de liǎn bèi yān xūn hēi le
他们的脸被烟熏黑了。
Their faces were blackened by the smoke.
